Qingdao, October 19, 2019 — WACKER will be presenting the new ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 product series at this year’s CMEF & ICMD (China International Medical Equipment Fair and International Component Manufacturing & Design Show) Autumn show. Due to particularly low contents of volatiles, migratables and extractables, this liquid silicone rubber meets strict regulatory requirements for sensitive applications in the baby-care, food and medical technology sectors without post-cure. ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 also exhibits excellent mechanical properties in its non post-cured state. 2019 CMEF & ICMD Autumn takes place in Qingdao, China from September 19 to 22.
In order to fulfill regulatory requirements, articles made from liquid silicone rubber must be post-cured if they are intended for sensitive applications. With ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 series liquid silicone rubber, this expensive, time-consuming and labor-intensive step can be eliminated.
ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 cures to translucent elastomers whose volatiles content – without thermal post-treatment – usually ranges from 0.2 to 0.3 weight percent. So, even in the non-post-cured state, they are already far below the limit value of 0.5 weight percent that applies to the volatiles content of silicone articles intended for food contact and baby-care applications.
Due to their high purity, ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 elastomer parts are suitable for food-contact applications and can be used in line with the recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They also meet the criteria of selected biocompatibility tests in ISO 10993 and US Pharmacopeia (Class VI). Moreover, the particularly low content of migratables and extractables from ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 elastomer parts proves hugely advantageous for applications in medical technology.
In their non post-cured state, the ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 product series is available in hardness levels between 30 and 70 Shore A, with a particularly narrow width of specification of ± 3 Shore-A points. Parts molded from ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 features excellent mechanical properties. This is particularly important for manufacturing of baby-care articles, such as feeding teats and pacifiers or teething rings.
ELASTOSIL? LR 5040 can be readily processed by injection molding. As the resulting parts do not have to be post-cured, production processes can be greatly streamlined and extensively automated. This makes for very rapid, efficient and cost-effective large-scale production – even under cleanroom conditions. Typical applications are baby pacifiers and feeding teats, metering valves, gaskets for kitchen appliances, food containers, as well as rubber-elastic articles for the medical technology sector.
